Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Philadelphia, Dalessandro's Steaks stands out as a true sanctuary for cheesesteak lovers and hoagie enthusiasts alike. This iconic spot specializes in serving authentic Philly cheesesteaks crafted from fresh-cut rib-eye steaks and generously piled hoagies that showcase the best of classic sandwich artistry. From the first bite, you’re immersed in the rich, savory flavors that have made Dalessandro's a neighborhood staple and a must-visit culinary destination.
The heart of Dalessandro's menu is undeniably the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with Whiz and Onions. Imagine tender, perfectly chopped rib-eye steak mingling with melty Cheese Whiz and sweet, sautéed onions, all nestled in a soft yet resilient seeded bun. The steak juices soak into the bread just enough to elevate every mouthful without succumbing to sogginess, creating a wonderful harmony of textures. For those seeking variety, options like the Cheesesteak with Fried Onions or the indulgent Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak promise bold flavors while staying true to Philly roots.
The hoagie selections here are equally impressive, with fresh-cut meats and carefully layered ingredients. The Italian Hoagie, loaded with sharp provolone, imported ham, capicola, and a mix of crisp veggies, strikes a perfect balance between hearty and refreshing. Guests can also tailor their cheese experience, choosing from classic American cheese to sharp provolone, or opting for the iconic Cheese Whiz, ensuring every sandwich caters to individual cravings.
Reviews from patrons echo the quality and authenticity Dalessandro's consistently delivers. One visitor from Michigan shared, “Perfect amount of cheese and steak! The bread is soft and the perfect amount of toppings!! We have never had a 'REAL' Philly Steak before, and after one bite, we were instantly in love.” Another customer praises the meticulous preparation, noting the “steak chopped perfectly fine so every bite is juicy, savory, and packed with flavor,” while highlighting how the onions are cooked to just the right tenderness to retain a satisfying crunch.
Dining at Dalessandro's is more than just a meal—it’s a genuinely comforting experience. The welcoming atmosphere buzzes with locals and visitors eager to savor a genuine taste of Philadelphia. Whether grabbing a quick lunch or sitting down with friends on a sunny day, the vibe here feels both unpretentious and full of pride in tradition. And while the portions are generous—one customer playfully remarks there’s “way too much meat for me”—it only adds to the indulgence.
While the legendary cheesesteaks steal the show, Dalessandro's also offers tempting sides like banana peppers and refreshing beverages including Birch Beer and classic soda pop, completing the authentic Philly sandwich experience. Even the sweet finish with a slice of creamy banana pudding showcases their attention to satisfying all aspects of your craving.
In a city renowned for its cheesesteaks, Dalessandro's Steaks is a beacon of authenticity, quality, and flavor. It’s a place where each sandwich is crafted with care, every ingredient shines, and every bite tells a story of Philadelphia’s culinary heritage. For anyone searching for “a real Philly cheesesteak,” Dalessandro's doesn’t just promise it—they deliver it, time and again.
The food was good. Way too much meat for me, but to each his own. The meat was tender & make sure you say "yes" to salt & pepper or you'll have a bland sandwich! The bun was nice & soft. The peppers were sweet & tender just the way I like them. The only problem I had was the cheez whiz was an extra $1 & they gave me a teaspoon of it(as you can see in the photo) which the wrapper consumed most of lol other then that it was a great experience!
Perfect amount of cheese and steak! The bread is soft and the perfect amount of toppings!! We have never had a 'REAL' Philly Steak, (we are from MI) so we read reviews and we were in love at 1st bite!!! Definitely worth the trip if you want to eat a real Philly cheesesteak in Philly
Good cheesesteaks. Seeded bun is a hit. Good amount of cheese spreed really well throughout. Onions and veggie topping perfectly cooked but also still have a crunch. Not soggy. Great flavors. It was a beautiful day outside and we were with friends so the wait wasn’t bad at all but maybe if it was raining or something miserable, the line would be smaller and the wait would be more miserable. We went on a Saturday at 1:30pm in October and we waited about 20 min for four steaks. We brought a blanket and sat on the grass next to the shop. Magical. Otherwise it’s either a to go situation or you get one of the four tables available for your group. We also people go across the street to chubbies to use their tables lol staff was nice, fast, and hard workers. Very Philly MO. I would recommend.
Dalessandro’s absolutely lives up to the hype. The steak is chopped perfectly fine so every bite is juicy, savory, and packed with flavor. The roll soaks up the juices without getting soggy, the onions are cooked just right, and the cheese blends into every crevice the way a real Philly cheesesteak should. What makes it stand out is the balance — nothing is overpowering, everything works together. It’s not just meat thrown in a bun; it’s a proper cheesesteak built with intention. Simple, classic, and done right. If you’re in Philly and want the real thing, this is the spot. No gimmicks, no shortcuts — just a perfect cheesesteak every single time. When I left a tip, the cashier mentioned to the rest of the staff who all said thank you. It was unexpected and a nice feeling being thanked by the staff for tipping.
Well, Alessandro’s is one of the best if not the top five in the Philadelphia region for cheesesteaks. You may want to go to others like Jim stakes on South Street and some of the other more touristy spots but for people who know this is the place to go. Avoid Gino’s and Pat stakes at all cost. You will be sorely disappointed. Now I’d like to provide the reasons why I gave this not five stars across the board. There is no atmosphere you are no longer permitted to go inside of Dalessandro’s. It is a pick up only outside there are three available picnic tables that they have that is it. I had asked them about opening up the inside and they told me they have no plans to do that in the immediate future, which is sad. Now the cheesesteaks I’ve had there been eating at Delasandro’s for over 25 years approximately and they have been really good at times and other times they’ve been just average. With other popular cheesesteaks in the area and the affordability of it being so expensive because my two cheesesteaks I got were a regular cheesesteak with American mayo fried onions, and the other one was a chicken cheesesteak with cheese, whiz, and fried onions. That came to $33! Now we did have a celebrity in our midst. Ronny Chieng from the Daily show. I now go to another cheesesteak place close by my house called Verona’s and for about the same price the cheesesteaks were better flavored and seasoning. The rolls were a little bit better as well and it was just an all-around better experience. You can check out my other reviews from Verona‘s to wherever else I’ve been in the world.
Awesome place. Genuine and high caliber cheesesteaks running around $17-20 each. Cash only, order at the right window, wait for your name to be called, pick up on the left. Outdoor picnic tables but no indoor seating.
Cash only! Otherwise, perfect. They do regular steaks or chicken “steaks”.’ Meat is very finely chopped and mixed in with cheese, making for a soft but dense sandwich and delicious. I’d suggest the mix of American and Provolone. We waited about 10 minutes to order and 15-20 for three sandwiches on a Saturday at lunchtime. Chicken steak was ok too if you can’t have beef, the steak really was better! Prices are reasonable IMO, low teens $ for most standard options.
